Dog bed product pages all look alike. A happy dog, a plush surface, the word "premium".
The differences that decide whether a bed still does its job a year from now are inside it, where the photos do not go. Here are six things to check, and where to find each one on a product page.
1. What the mattress is made of
Most dog bed mattresses use one of four fills.
- Loose fiberfill: fluffy polyester stuffing. Soft at first, then it packs down and shifts toward the edges.
- Shredded foam: foam pieces in a bag. More body than fiberfill, but as a mattress fill it can still shift and clump.
- Egg crate foam: a sheet cut into peaks and valleys. It looks thicker than it is.
- Solid foam: one slab, or several layers stacked. This is the fill that holds its shape best.
Look for a page that says how many layers there are and what each one is. The word "orthopedic" on a dog bed has no fixed definition, so on its own it tells you very little.

2. What sits under the soft layer
A soft top layer is what makes a bed comfortable. A firmer layer underneath is what keeps a dog off the floor.
Check that the page names a base layer and says what it does. High-resilience foam is the usual choice for a base because it springs back. For a large dog this is the most important check on the list (more in what big and senior dogs need from a bed).
Already own a bed? The 10-second press test shows whether its base still pushes back.
3. What is in the bolsters
Bolsters are the raised sides. Many are filled with fiberfill alone, which is why they slump once a head has rested on them for a while.
A foam or foam-blend fill keeps a rim your dog can lean on. Also check whether the bolster fill has its own liner and comes out, so the cover can be washed properly.
4. Whether the foam is protected from liquid
Foam cannot go in the washing machine. Whatever reaches it stays in it.
A waterproof liner between the cover and the foam keeps drool, wet paws, spilled water bowls and accidents on the washable side. Check that the liner covers the whole mattress, that the bolsters are protected too, and what the page says about the zippers.

5. How the cover really washes
"Machine washable" covers a wide range. Four questions sort it out.
- Does the cover come off completely, or only in part?
- What do the care instructions say about cycle and drying?
- Are the zippers from a named maker?
- Can you buy a replacement cover later?
That last one matters more than it sounds. The cover takes the daily wear. A bed with a replaceable cover can be refreshed without buying a whole new bed, and a second cover keeps the bed in use on wash day.
6. What the certifications and the warranty really say
Two certifications show up often. CertiPUR-USยฎ is a program for foam. OEKO-TEXยฎ STANDARD 100 is a program for textiles. Both are independent programs that test materials against published criteria.
Both apply to the materials, not to the finished bed. A careful brand will say so.
Then read the warranty itself, not the badge. A warranty against "defects" is hard to claim on. A warranty that names flattening, and gives a measurement, tells you what the brand expects from its own foam.
The 60-second dog bed checklist
| Check | Good sign | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Mattress fill | Solid foam, layers named | "Orthopedic" with no detail |
| Base layer | A named, springy base | One soft layer only |
| Bolsters | Foam or foam blend, own liner | Fiberfill only |
| Liquid protection | Liner around mattress and bolsters | No liner mentioned |
| Cover | Fully removable, replacements sold | Spot clean only |
| Warranty | Names flattening with a number | "Defects" only |

How the VersaTails bed answers the six checks
We built the VersaTailsยฎ Orthopedic Dog Bed to be easy to check.
- Mattress: three solid foam layers. Cooling Gel Memory Foam, Orthopedic Memory Foam, and a High-Resilience Support Base.
- Base: the High-Resilience Support Base gives steady support under the two softer layers.
- Bolsters: 70% shredded memory foam and 30% fiberfill, on three sides, with an open front for easy entry.
- Liquid protection: a waterproof TPU protector around the mattress, a leakproof protector around the bolsters, and gusseted YKK zippers.
- Cover: fully removable and machine washable on a gentle cold cycle, then air dried. Replacement covers are sold separately.
- Certifications and warranty: CertiPUR-USยฎ certified foam and fabrics from mills certified to OEKO-TEXยฎ STANDARD 100. These certifications apply to the materials we buy, not to the finished bed. The foam core is covered by our 1-Year No-Flatten Warranty against flattening of more than two inches.
FAQ
Is memory foam better than egg crate foam for a dog bed?
Solid memory foam keeps its shape better than egg crate foam, because there are no thin valleys or small peaks to collapse. It still needs a firmer layer underneath it.
Do I need a waterproof liner if my dog is house trained?
Yes. Drool, wet paws after a walk and a knocked-over water bowl all reach the foam the same way. A liner is the only thing between them and a core you cannot wash.
Is a more expensive dog bed worth it?
Price alone does not prove anything. Run the six checks. A bed that passes them and holds its shape can cost less over time than a cheaper bed you replace again and again.
